"This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding"..."A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.."
- U.S. Constitution; supremacy clause, and Second Amendment.
I just read into the D.C. vs. Heller Supreme Court case. Although it is absymally anti-gun in its commentary, it did have one positive effect. It made it official in American law that what's clearly written in the Constitution might apply.
I think it's sad though, that with all the provisions in the ruling, they simply agreed that outright prohibition was wrong, but anything less than that, like D.C.'s unchallenged ban on magazine fed ammunition (read: ban on most handguns) is perfectly alright.
I've seen the stats, and I know that it's near on impossible to prove cause and effect, but I just wanted to point out this one fact:
The supreme court ruled that handguns cannot be completely banned in D.C. in 2008. By 2009, homicides dropped 23%.
